LPA Student Challenges / Winner's Experience Days / LPA Photoshoot Experience

You may remember our recent competition, the LPA Student Challenges... To recap, we set a series of photo challenges to the UK’s photography students.  The winners received invaluable LPA ‘Experience Days’ plus a copy of Lisa’s guide to becoming a photographer,  ''Setting up a Successful Photography Business'' ( published by A&C Black, Jan 2012).

Here’s an update from the LPA Photoshoot Experience, a prize that included attending a live casting followed by the actual shoot.

The winner of the LPA Photoshoot Experience was Matthew Town who has now graduated from the Arts University College Bournemouth with a 2:1 in Commercial Photography, BA (Hons).

Matthew rose to the challenge of submitting an image on the theme ‘Challenge’. His winning image was then used to promote the rest of our competition.

Julian Calverley's recent commission for Celgene through Seven Stones provided the opportunity for the 'LPA Photoshoot Experience'.  Matthew spent a day at Holborn Studios casting backs of heads followed by a day on location at an allotment in Surrey, where poisonous snakes temporarily interrupted the shoot!

Here’s what Matthew had to say…

'The experience days gave me a real opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes of a shoot! I didn't realise really how much work goes into the organisation of it all. The taking of the pictures is really just a small part of the whole process.

'What the experience also made me realise is that there is a lot I need to learn about the industry, and for that reason I have started working full time at a photography studio in London where I can gain first hand experience of large commercial shoots. I don't think I would have taken this step if it wasn't for the LPA Student Challenges. It was great to meet a lot of the team at LPA, and I hope I will cross paths with them in the near future.'

Since winning one of the LPA Student Challenges, Matthew has also been featured in the British Journal of Photography as 'One to Watch' and scooped Gold in this year's Royal Photographic Society under 25's award.

Tune in again next week for Jordi Ruiz Carera’s 'LPA Promo Experience'...
