Emma recently joined Tom Carter from The Economist on a trip to Brixham harbour to investigate the impact of Brexit & climate change on the fishing industry. 

‘Brexit has disappointed British fishermen’ was the headline in yesterday’s magazine. A slightly higher share of catch hasn’t made up for trade barriers with the EU. The article explores this in depth and exposes other concerns too about an ageing workforce and fish migrating due to warming water. 

A second article from our visit was published earlier this week about the dramatic increase in octopus catch. This species has become a growing presence in our waters, feeding on lobster and other shellfish. Fishermen have felt the loss of these more traditional catches, alongside fish such as cod migrating further north to cooler waters.

Together, the stories offer a glimpse into a fishing industry in transition and the people trying to adapt to the changes. It was great to work with Tom and the team at The Economist to bring these stories to light. Check out the full articles online and in print.
