MARCUS PEEL / PURCELL
We are delighted to share Marcus’ latest commission for Purcell, the international practice of conservation architects, masterplanners and heritage consultants.
Over a week, Marcus photographed Purcell's ongoing conservation work at Winchester Cathedral. Shooting in his home city meant he could choose each moment to suit the subject, and let the light and weather lead.
Marcus started at dawn to catch the first light on the cathedral's north side. He returned in the early morning, when low sun brings out the modelling of the life-sized sculpture of Jane Austen. For the interior, he waited for an overcast day, when soft, even light reveals every detail of the Tournai marble font.
Marcus worked closely with Charlotte Robinson, Winchester Cathedral Architect since 2021, who is responsible for the conservation and care of the cathedral's historic fabric and buildings within its precincts, and advises on future development projects.
