NEW SIGNING / NIC KANE

We are delighted to introduce you to a new addition to the LPA roster - lifestyle and documentary photographer / filmmaker, Nic Kane.

Nic’s journey started at Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in Visual Communications. She moved into photography after an initial career in design. With a love of meeting and working with people and an interest in human connections and stories, Nic is fascinated with documenting the world through a lens. Producing authentic imagery that is honest and soulful, her interest in finding details and moments that are passing, such as light, shape, energy and emotion really shines through in her work.

With a sterling career under her belt, shooting for brands and publications such as Footlocker, Palladium, Oxfam GB, Boiler Room, Channel 4, Mixmag, Elle Decoration UK, Wonderland Magazine, Clash Magazine and High Snobiety to name just a few, we can’t wait to start working with Nic and introduce her to all of our clients!

We sat with her to discuss all things Kane, here’s what she had to say…

Which came first, photography or filmmaking?

Photography is something I’ve been doing since I was a teenager, filmmaking came later. I started making music videos, initially editing, then directing and working with a crew. The filmmaking developed from there and led to more commercially focused film work, branded pieces and short docs.

Your work is often very tonal and natural, how do you achieve this through the lens?

I’m often looking to capture photography that celebrates natural light and the beautiful, often fleeting moments it offers.

I like to create a sense of depth and softness in my work and really enjoy the relational element between the subject and photographer. I want subjects to feel at ease and natural, for the story and emotion to be authentic.

What was your first ‘pinch me moment’ in your photography career?

It’s a good question, but a tricky one, because I feel like my goal posts of achievement are always moving! I’ve been lucky enough to shoot in some beautiful natural locations and landscapes. I have a huge appreciation for being able to work and create in these environments.

What's your ideal commission?

Shooting in a beautiful natural outdoor location with a great team and subject! I love process and collaboration.

I’m currently looking to capture a series focusing on natural wine production.

Have you had any disasters on set?

Not exactly a disaster but recently, just after we wrapped, a seagull flew overhead... yep, bird poo all over the camera. Not ideal. Great timing though…. And good luck?!

If you weren't a photographer what would you be?

Something that involves lots of time outside!

How do you think being both a photographer and filmmaker lends itself to each other?

I think for me, at the heart of both is storytelling. It’s always interesting to consider how to communicate in a still image, a series of stills and how to do so in a timeline.  Visual language, framing, lighting, tone all come into play when working in either format. I think filmmaking has helped and informed my directing as a photographer.

How do you find being a woman in the industry? Has anything changed since you started?

Becoming a photographer and filmmaker has been quite an organic process for me, my passion became my career and over time I came to understand where my talents sit. I try to focus on the work I’m creating and the way I work with others.

It’s good to see more female photographers being championed in recent years, more female led stories and perspectives.

If you could only eat one cuisine for the rest of your life what would it be?

I love food! So this is tough. But I think it’s got to be Italian.

If you could photograph one person dead or alive who would it be?

My grandfather

What are you looking forward to most about working with LPA as your agent?

Working with a great team and experienced agency on aspects of my business... perhaps allowing a little more time for personal projects and hopefully opening new doors to great commissions!

We are so happy to have Nic as part of our team - welcome to LPA!

Nic is UK based and readily available for shoots and commissions!
