LPA Photographers / Alice Whitby / In the Making

Portrait and lifestyle photographer Alice Whitby has made fantastic use of her time during lockdown by scanning the B&W film she shot whilst making her book ‘In the Making.’

The book features talented designers, makers and food producers, working with traditional techniques to create one-off handmade products.

While the final images for the book were shot digitally and in colour, Alice chose to shoot one roll of B&W film with each maker while she was with them. She chose to do this in order to honour the slow, skilled and considered way the makers work, with her own traditional craft. She used her Mamiya RZ67 on Ilford HP5 film and then even developed the film by hand and made prints in the darkroom.

This was the first time she had been back in a darkroom since university and Alice said it was amazing to be working physically with the medium of photography again after so long.

She also found that shooting on film, and the restrictions that imposed, allowed her to reflect on the way she shoots. Limiting herself to one roll of film per model, she found she had to be more considered with each shot, and generally more patient in the whole image-making process.

We absolutely love the results, stunning work Alice!
