LPA Futures / Gavin Li / Urban Bee Keeping
Gavin Li has had a busy few months since winning LPA Futures in June. He has been selected as one of the 100 winners for Portrait of Britain again (his image of Brian was on the front cover of the Portrait of Britain book last year) and he’s also been shooting a number of exciting projects, one of which is this one on urban beekeeping.
Gavin says he became curious about urban beekeeping as he became more concerned about the depleting population of bees. Bees play a vital part in the ecosystem which is why there is a huge focus on sustaining their numbers. Gavin wanted to learn more about these fascinating creatures and decided to visit a local beekeeper based in London.
Dale runs Bermondsey Street Bees with his wife Sarah who both welcomed Gavin into their home, which used to be Victorian sugar warehouse. Gavin says that being an urban bee keeper is more than a passion for Dale as it’s become part of his everyday life. His home is where he operates a honey production company and the roof is where he keeps his bees in their hives.
Gavin says it was an eye opening experience to see inside the lives of the hard working bees and how urban beekeepers like Dale are doing their best to raise ethical bee welfare.
