This month we spent 5 minutes catching up with the winner of the LPA Student Challenges 2014-2015 final round – Emma Boyns. Emma – who is in her final year at the University of Gloucestershire studying Editorial and Advertising Photography – wins some amazing prizes including her own bespoke portfolio by the brilliant Delta Design with prints by Metro Imaging, as well as representation with LPA Futures for two years. Here’s what she had to say about the experience…
Congratulations on winning the LPA Student Challenges grand final! You’ve secured your place as one of the next group of LPA Futures photographers – how does it feel?
It feels great! I wanted to stay positive after entering but totally didn’t expect to win so it was a lovely surprise.
What are you looking forward to most about being a part of the LPA roster?
I think being part of a group of people whom I have looked up to and whose clients and work I really admire; Sam Stowell, Charlotte Tolhurst, Rowan Fee and others have really inspired my work.
For the final round you were asked by Richard Brim & Daniel Moorey of Adam&EveDDB to interpret the creative copy ‘Love it or Hate it’. What were your initial thoughts and how did you approach the brief?
This is actually a brief that I was set at university for one module, which all of us hated at the time so there was a bit of a joke about that at first! But I approached it in a completely different way and chose not to over complicate it, focusing on the one, simple theme of liquorice and how to create a striking series based around that narrative.

What made you want to pursue a career as a food photographer?
I’ve always loved cooking and baking and have found both to be very therapeutic, so the movement towards this genre happened entirely naturally for me; at first I didn’t even realise I was photographing everything I was making, and it soon became second nature. I don’t think I’d have the time to invest in a different subject, as food really is my passion and is constantly on my mind.
How would you describe your photographic style?
I would describe it as fairly delicate, almost fragile sometimes. Although that may seem to contrast with my more conceptual, graphic images, I feel that a simplistic, minimalist theme runs through most of my work and the way I style shots often makes them quite feminine and dainty.

Where do you look for inspiration – any favourite photographers, websites or blogs?
I am a huge fan of food blogs, which were the main focus of my dissertation. I admire the ability that bloggers such as Linda Lomelino and Izy Hossack have to cook, bake, write and photograph so beautifully. I also love cookbooks such as Nigel Slater’s Tender and Katie Quinn Davies’ What Katie Ate, and photographers such as Jean Cazals, Jonathan Gregson and Mowie Kay have been really inspirational for me.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I have a big interest in psychology, which was my intended path while I was at sixth form, so perhaps something down that line. But I always think I’d find it hard to resist a food-based career, so you’d probably be more likely to find me in a little family-run bakery or restaurant.

Your work impressed the judges in Student Challenge Number Two as well as the final round, what advice would you have for students wanting to enter the competition next year?
I think it would be to enter images that are strong rather than images that you ‘like.’ Don’t become too attached to an image because of the setting or context in which it was taken or the sentimental value it has to you – remember that the judges can only see the photographic merit and not these personal elements.

We have a very exciting announcement to make! Top advertising agency Adam&EveDDB have agreed to give our five Student Challenge finalists the chance to interpret one of their well known and much loved campaigns. But that’ s not all…their multi award winning Executive Creative Director Richard Brim and Head of Print Daniel Moorey are going to judge the work and decide the winner!
Just a quick recap. LPA Student Challenges is an annual competition that sets a series of challenges to the nations photography students. It offers some invaluable prizes and real opportunities to kick start your photography career .
Challenge Number One was to interpret the theme ‘Challenge’, the winning image being used to promote the competition. The prize was the LPA Shoot Experience and the winner and the runner up secured their place in the final.
For Challenge Number Two we are asking you to submit a portfolio of ten images and a short explanation of why you are ‘One To Watch’. This time we are offering the LPA Portfolio Experience as the prize and choosing not one, but three winners who will also get the chance to enter the final. You still just about have time to enter, so don’t miss this amazing opportunity to get yourself noticed. Deadline is Friday 23rd January. Click here for all the details.
And so to Challenge Number Three and the grand final. The five finalists will now have the chance to shoot their interpretation of a famous Adam&EveDDB campaign and the winner will go on to scoop the biggest prize we’ve offered to date – representation by LPA as part of their LPA Futures programme and a their own bespoke printed portfolio worth over £1000!! Full details will be announced on the 6th February.
So, if you think you have what it takes to be an advertising photographer, enter Challenge Number Two now to get a place in the final- opportunities like this don’t come around that often!

In anticipation of the announcement of Student Challenge Number Two tomorrow, we thought we would share our recent catch up with last year’s winner Lauren Stirling. Read on to find out how she’s been doing since winning, and how she found her LPA Marketing Masterclass.

What have you been up to since winning Challenge Two last year Lauren?
Since last year I have completed my BA in Commercial Photography at Edinburgh College with distinction which I am very proud of. As part of the course we had the opportunity to exhibit at Freerange at the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane which was an amazing experience and great for creating new contacts. Shortly after that I was commissioned to shoot a series of Book covers for a New York-based best selling author which has kept me very busy over the last few months! I have also recently started teaching photography at HNC level which has been both challenging and rewarding.

Tell us a bit about your LPA Marketing Masterclass.
When I was invited in to meet with the team at LPA I didn’t know what to expect but what a great day! It was a great opportunity to show my work to some of the most influencial people in the business and get one-to-one honest feedback. The feedback was useful in helping me not only refine my portfolio but it gave me a strong vision on what direction it needed to go in. I was told that my work would not be out of place in London which gave me a huge confidence boost. An invaluable experience for aspiring photographers.
Did you get some useful advice on how to market yourself as a professional photographer?
Living in Scotland can be tough as the market is very different to London so having Tom give me advice on how and where to advertise myself in Scotland was really useful. Since then I have secured work internationally so I am doing something right.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue to grow and develop my portfolio. I am also hoping to make a trip to London early next year to visit LPA again to discuss where my portfolio is now and how to take it forward.
